새의 모습을 한 흔들개비에 균형을 잃지 않고 살아가고 싶은 마음, 세상에 외치고 싶은 가치를 잃지 않기를 염원하는 마음을 담아 이름을 지어주었다. go vegan, go love, go peace, go punk, go equality.

We wake up in the morning, caught with rage. The world seems to be almost filled with angry voices all around the place. The more we focus our attention on the things happening outside, the more our mind dries out impatiently. But let’s leave the angry voices on the ground behind and go under the ground for a moment. Sense the earth with our fingers instead of eyes and ears. Oxygen is scarce under the ground, but organic matters are rich and abundant.

Running Underground is the second exhibition to happen in Elephantspace’s new venue in Yeonnam-dong. The exhibition imagines materializing the attitude of ‘punk.’  But what is punk? Punk is an unburdened resolution of anger. It is a cry for playing en masse, an aural and visual representation of the D.I.Y. spirit that ‘anyone can do it,’ a promise and a cry to follow one’s own path. Running Underground is a follow-up of Groundhood, an exhibition that took place back in 2017. While the previous rendition traced the ‘movement’ of broad solidarity found inside and outside of the art scene, the current exhibition strives to follow the egalitarian D.I.Y. punk spirit and rebuild life in the world full of rage! and abundance!

Then, what about the “ground”? Since ancient times, the earth ground has made mankind imagine and reflect on many things. Humans have seen Gaia, Grandmother Mago, Woong-nyeo, Isis, Ksitigarbha Bodhisattva, Grandmother Seoulmundae, and other sacred beings. The earth is the basis and a powerful material foundation of human existence. However, what is happening with the earth in contemporary times?

A plot of land is chased down to give out coal and minerals. The Earth as a whole now appears as a coal mine, and the land no more than a storage of fresh minerals. The fields that had been cultivated by farmers did not resemble the earth in our time. In the past, cultivation meant growing and caring for something. Farmers were not tasked to appropriate the land. Rather, their job was to entrust the seeds to their own vitality and protect them to make them thrive. Now, the air is forced to give nitrogen; the land is forced to provide ore; ore is then forced to offer elements such as uranium; uranium is appropriated to give nuclear power, whether for destruction or peaceful use.

In our time, the earth has become an energy storage. Maybe it is a natural result that humans who live on the ground have become exchangeable resources and means that can be processed via technology.

Thus, running under the ground is to deny worldly values, hide oneself under such values, and move oneself as a unique existence. To possess a unique existence is not to have disparate characteristics. Rather, it is to possess one’s own existence that others cannot dispose at will. In this sense, *Running Underground* touches an aspect of the punk spirit.

And the exhibition presents two artists: Kim peace and ikkibawiKrrr.

Through his visual art practice of picture books, figurative art, and street art, Kim peace illuminates and observes the lives of impoverished beings, attempting to connect different worlds. He pursues sustainable artistic activities that do not harm the planet, accessible to a broader range of people regardless of class, gender, identity, and living environment.

The following sentences show the artist’s thoughts on the life of a punk.

For me, the life of a punk is spontaneous and emotional. Our society today has a strong tendency to trivialize things that are spontaneous and emotional. However, spontaneous and emotional things are the driving force for pure expression. I participated in this project with the hope of rethinking my own life by balancing the spontaneous and emotional aspects of punk with the current society that only emphasizes what is stable and rational. I tried to proceed with my work as spontaneous and immersed in the current emotion as possible.

Kim peace created a Heundeulgaebi(a pure Korean word for ‘mobile’) with a punk spirit. As it has been with his previous works, he went outside to pick up things that had been discarded and lost their uses to produce his work. He named his bird-shaped mobiles with a wish to live without losing balance and not to lose the values he wanted to proclaim to the world: “go vegan, go love, go peace, go punk, go equality.” He engraved his wish not to lose balance even in times of struggle onto the bird figures.

ikkibawiKrrr is a visual research band. The band is composed of Ko Gyeol, Kim Jungwon, and Cho Jieun. The members of ikkibawiKrrr were previously part of the collective mixrice. Currently, they are engaging with diverse aspects and connections of plants, civilization, natural phenomena, colonialism, and ecology.

For the current exhibition, ikkibawiKrrr has built a kind of monument made of earth. The monument was installed in three places: the rooftop of Elephantspace in Seoul, an isolated plot of land in Goesan, and a paddy field in Mungyeong, South Korea. The earthen pillar reminds us of human architecture or monuments, and it is a concentration of the earth. In our time, slums are compressed as if they were plastic waste and neatly removed before our eyes. They are safely piled up invisibly on building sites for cheap rental accommodations or motels. A huge block of buildings, built on top of the cleared land, has gone beyond a certain limit to be called an ‘apartment complex.’ It has now become an enormous institution, a solid net, or a means to maintain one’s own class. What should we call this? The earthen pillar created by ikkibawiKrrr can be thought of as a sort of a monument to a land that will soon be redeveloped and disappear.

Now. We move into the work. Under the ground.
